Dinner-Debate at San Diego: EBBS  makes its debut  at the Society for Neuroscience

During the last meeting of the Society for Neuroscience in San Diego, EBBS sponsored a debate entitled "Retrieval and Reconsolidation: New Findings and Old Concepts" as a programme ancillary event.

The debate created a most interesting forum in which established concepts of consolidation were challenged  in the light of new data.

The debate followed an excellent symposium on reconsolidation organised by Joe LeDoux and involved most of its participants as well as other behavioral neuroscientists. Steven Rose (Milton Keynes), Lynn Nadel (Tucson) and Richard Morris (Edinburgh) animated the evening and participants included among others: Joe LeDoux (NewYork), Alcino Silva (Los Angeles), David Riccio (Kent), Gyorgy Buzsaki (Newark), Karim Nader, (Montreal),Yadin Dudai (Rehovot), Susan Sara (Paris).

The EBBS debate brought together in a  friendly atmosphere, more than 100 people for three hours of interesting and animated discussion. The high level of participation underscored the wide interest in the recent resurrection  of the reconsolidation concept among  people in the neurosciences. Participants included veterans working for years on this topic, newcomers to the field and many students. The evening debate format provided ample time for extended discussion and exchange of opinions with the people most involved in this area.

Undoubtedly, this debate was of major importance for EBBS, raising the profile of our European society on the other side of the ocean through an exciting and successful scientific event.  Shall we continue this at the next Society for Neuroscience meeting in Orlando? The EBBS committee is willing to provide some modest financial support  to anyone who would like to organise an innovative event of potentially high scientific interest at the

Orlando meeting. For further information, contact any EBBS committee member.
