Letter from the President - Spring 2012

Dear EBBS friends and colleagues,

I am pleased to share with you some very stimulating developments and upcoming activities taking place at the EBBS.
A first important movement is the incorporation of young scientists to the active life of our society.

Following a very successful 'Young Investigators Special Symposium' during the 2011 EBBS meeting in Seville, the EBBS council has decided to strengthen interactions with our younger members by consolidating the Young Investigators Special Symposium for future meetings and dedicating one of the slots for council members for a young EBBS scientist (interested PhD students and postdocs within the 5 years from the PhD are encouraged to send their candidatures to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it not later than April 20th). I am particularly thankful to the winners of the young investigators award in Seville for having taken the first steps to organize an EBBS young scientist's network - more soon! Your input is a great asset to the society!

In this connection, please note that the Call for Nominations for three EBBS council members has been sent recently. I urge you to take part in this important process to ensure that our Society continues to represent all relevant EBBS fields. And, please, participate with your vote whenever the invitation comes!

Our participation and presence at the upcoming FENS Forum in Barcelona is the highlight of our society this year. In addition to the excellent program offered by the Forum with, this time, a large representation of the field of brain and behavior, there are several exciting EBBS events that I encourage you not to miss:

-       The EBBS Satellite to FENS: "Stress, the story of our social lives" (July 13th; http://sssl2012.epfl.ch/http://sssl2012.epfl.ch/), with a great program and opportunities for oral presentations and posters.

-       The EBBS / Behavioural Brain Research Prize Lecture by Trevor Robbins (July 15th, 1 pm), who will talk about the "Neural basis of impulsivity and compulsivity: neuropsychiatric implications".

-       The EBBS Social, with the AGM followed by a Banquet in a beautiful environment by the Barcelona's port (July 15th); the occasion to encounter your EBBS colleagues in a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere. I am happy to announce that there will be reduced prize tickets for our young members.

Importantly, this is also the time to shape our next EBBS meeting that will take place in Munich, from 6-9th September 2013 (http://www.ebbs2013.com/index.phphttp://www.ebbs2013.com/index.php). Save the date! The local committee chaired by Mathias Schmidt is putting together a wonderful meeting. The program will include 8 top internationally prominent scientists (Ernst Fehr, Patrick Vuilleumier, Eleanore Maguire, Carla Shatz, Stanislas Dehaene, Florian Holsboer, Pier Francesco Ferrari, and Frances Champagne) offering the keynote lectures. The Call for Symposia and for a Satellite event is currently open (deadline June 11th) - it would be great to have your input and proposal.

The EBBS is blooming! Being the first funded European Neuroscience Society, the EBBS has always promoted the advancement of our understanding of brain-behavior interactions. Currently on its 44th year of existence, the EBBS has consolidated as the reference society in the field of brain and behavior, with its strengths being a solid translational focus that reunites work performed across different species (from invertebrates to humans), a deep interest for the development of theoretical models of brain function based on state-of-the-art data, a dynamic incorporation of novel approaches and emerging topics, and the excellence of its bi-annual meetings as the encounter setting for all scientists interested in understanding brain-behavior interactions. Join the EBBS initiatives by providing your input not only during the meetings, but also through the website (http://www.ebbs-science.org/cms/) and Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/EBBS.sciencehttp://www.facebook.com/EBBS.science).

I look forward to seeing you in Barcelona in July!

Best Regards,

Carmen Sandi
