Election announcement

We invite nominations for candidates (who should be members of EBBS) to stand for election for President of EBBS and for membership of the Committee (2 members to be elected).

Nominations should be made by a member of EBBS in good standing and sent by e-mail to the Secretary ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) by February 28th 2009. Nominations should include a short biographical statement of the candidate and this will be distributed with the ballots. In accepting nominations, it will be assumed that the nominee has already obtained the agreement of the candidate to stand for election.

The articles of EBBS require that election be by postal ballot. In order to reduce mailing costs, the ballot paper will be distributed by e-mail and members are asked to print this, cast their vote and return the voting sheet by regular mail, with their membership number on the outside of the envelope (not on the ballot paper!)  Your membership number is 4 letters and one number. It can be found as the order number on the receipt for your dues payment. It is also your FENS number and the number you use to get access to EJN. If you still cannot find it, you can merely write your name and address on the outside of the envelope.

The ballot papers will be distributed in late March and should be returned post-marked no later than April 30th 2009.

The committee are investigating the possibility to hold future ballots by electronic voting. If you have a view on this, please e-mail the Secretary.

Registration now open for the 41st AGM in Rhodes

The 41st AGM will be held in Rhodes on the 14th to 18th September 2009, partly overlapping with the Hellenic Neuroscience Society meeting (13th and 14th September 2009) in the same location.

This is likely to be very popular meeting and members are invited to register early to ensure their first choice of accommodation and your book place at the Gala Dinner on September 17th.

Please visit the meeting website for further information and registration:

Rhodes EBBS Awards

Rhodes EBBS Awards will be made to 10 early-career members of EBBS. Awards will be based on evidence of merit and potential, with awards being made in two categories: pre-doctoral and post-doctoral (being no more than five years since the award of PhD or equivalent).

The awards will be 500Euros plus a ticket to the Gala Dinner at which the President will present the awards.

*NEW INITIATIVE* EBBS Sponsored International Lecturers

Members are invited to submit proposals to the committee for support for an EBBS sponsored International Lecturer at a local or national meeting or workshop. A travel grant will be awarded to defray the additional costs of a lecturer from another country. Applicants (who should be members of EBBS) should provide sufficient details to satisfy the committee that

- the lecturer would make an important contribution and enhance the meeting

- the lecture will raise the profile of both the meeting and the EBBS

- the meeting will be advertised widely, with EBBS support acknowledged

- the meeting will be open to all EBBS members

Awards will be made on a case by case basis and will be competitive with other applications. Applications (which should include a one-page c.v. of the nominated lecturer) should be made by August 31st and addressed to the Secretary ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ). Successful applicants will be informed after the meeting of the EBBS Committee in September.

Future AGM

The committee invite members to consider whether they would be in a position to organise and host an AGM. The committee is considering bids for 2011, and although 2013 may seem a long way off, early booking and planning can be essential in some cities. Committee members who have organised meetings in Dublin 2005 (Shane O’Mara), Trieste 2007 (Alessandro Treves), Rhodes 2009 (Fotini Stylianopoulou) would be pleased to correspond with members who would like more information and advice.

FENS 2010

The 7th FENS will be held in Amsterdam, 3-7th July 2010.

The LOC of FENS2010 has issued the Call for Proposals (deadline February 28th 2009) for symposia and workshops. We hope to see behavioural research and members of EBBS well represented at the meeting. We will publicise symposia organised by EBBS members, so please do let the Secretary know if your proposal is accepted so that it can be included in a future bulletin. The details of the EBBS lecture at FENS (the Elsevier Behavioural Brain Research Lecture) will be published on the website when they have been agreed with the FENS committee.

Membership

We are pleased to announce that, once again, we have not increased our membership dues and EBBS still represents excellent value. At just 40 Euros (20 for students), we enjoy amongst the lowest membership dues of any international society. Furthermore, by keeping our expenses low, this year we have been able to increase the number of travel awards we make. In addition to support for our junior colleagues attendance at the AGM, we have also announced a new initiative EBBS Sponsored International Lecturers - to enhance meetings organised or attended by members in the field of brain and behaviour.

The Society currently has 398 members. We are always pleased to welcome new members. Furthermore, it is not too late to apply for membership in time to benefit from reduced meeting registration for Rhodes 2009. Other benefits of membership include automatic registration with FENS and online subscription to European Journal of Neuroscience.

Many of our colleagues, who we are pleased to see regularly at the AGMs are, surprisingly, not members. Please encourage colleagues to join the Society.
